Welcome to the retro-comput(ing) blog
Welcome to my retro-comput.ing blog ! I set up this site as I have a number of ‘retro’ computing things and am aiming to work on new and further areas of retro computing.
First, a little bit about me and my interest in retro computing. My name is Alan, I’ve been into computers since I was a youngster, the first family computer being a Sinclair ZX Spectrum. I enjoyed gaming and programming, the ‘INPUT’ collection of magazines providing me with an early experience of coding from copying and then understanding/modifying to make the programs/games slightly different. Other computers used and learned were a Commdore 64, Vic20, +4 and then the Amiga series. For me I’ll draw a line at the early ‘Pentium’ series computers, as by then I was using higher level programming langauges and Windows, whilst these early computers are now considered very much retro, I’ve never really programmed them in their ‘native’ modes (DOS/Windows) much beyond C, .NET and languages that came about with the rapid advancement of Linux.
Likewise, alot of my ‘early’ career was based on Sun Microsystems hardware, such as IPC, E250/450 and E10K’s with storage solutions. Whilst I would love to have an ‘IPC’ (again) or even a Sun Ultra 2, its unlikely in the near future I would own any of these, hence my ‘retro-comput(ing)’ will focus on the 1980’s and early 1990s.
For now I hope to just blog about things I am doing, and that others may enjoy/learn something from it also.
Thanks for reading the blog !
Alan
